The only thing that could halt all the activities in the busy island of Bali is Nyepi – the day of silence. Roads will be cleared from vehicles and exhaust smoke, all inbound and outbound flights will cease. No lights, no loud sound, and people will remain inside of their homes for 24 hours from 6 am on March 25th until 6 am the following day. Pecalang – Balinese guardsmen – will be on standby in case people encounter emergency situation and are in need to seek medical assistance.

Visiting the island during Nyepi can come as a privilege. Most accommodations run normally, modestly fulfilling the needs of their guests without providing excessive entertainment. Guests are also not allowed to leave the hotel premise – nothing to lose, as all shops and attractions are closed. Since there will be minimum lights, the sky will be very clear at night, allowing you to stare at the stars freely. You will find that the silence promises a pure serenity.

If you stay at Komaneka Resorts during the day of silence, here are some tips you can do to make your stay memorable and a one-of-a-kind:

Ogoh-Ogoh Parade

The day before Nyepi is called Tawur Agung Kesanga – celebrated based on the concept of Tri Hita Karana (the three causes of well-being to keep the balance with the universe and the unseen). Rituals are delivered at the crossroads as well as households to cleanse negative energy. Right on this day, ogoh-ogoh festival takes place throughout the island, going on in late afternoon until dark. People will swarm around to watch the giant puppets symbolizing the evil spirits being carried around by a massive number of people with gamelan instruments. Traffic jam is very common, so look out for potentially crowded streets – unless you want to join the locals and tourists alike watching ogoh-ogoh.
