If you have flown thousands miles to explore the Island of Gods, you should not miss one of the most important cultural religious ceremonies, Galungan. Celebrated every 210 days, Galungan commemorates the triumph of Dharma (good, kindness) over ADharma (evil, badness). This special day is believed as the descent day of the Balinese God, Sang Hyang Widhi, accompanied by the ancestor spirits to the earth. Balinese locals prepare for Galungan by carefully crafting bamboo poles with offerings; referred to as penjor—which will line the streets all over Bali, as well as baking traditional treats and even sacrificing whole pigs. The region is transformed into an artistic and familial paradise, making it an ideal time for visitors from all over. The festivity is followed by Kuningan, and the two are the most important celebrations for Balinese Hindus.

This year, Galungan falls on September 16th, while Kuningan is ten days later on September 26th. The day of Galungan is important for the Balinese, which is similar to a new year, when everyone returns to their families and home villages. The following Thursdays, Manis Galungan, is a day to visit friends and relatives or for fun family trips. And 10 days later, Kuningan takes place at the end of the Galungan holiday period, showcasing a time when the ancestral spirits return to the place from which they came.

Rahajeng Nyanggra Galungan lan Kuningan from Komaneka family to yours. May all the blessings always be with us, and wishing you a happy, healthy and peaceful life. Meanwhile, stay safe and healthy!
